DreamBox Gallery presents Katharine Schutta: COLLAGE

September 12 – September 27, 2014

OPENING: Friday, September 12, 2014 – 6pm -10pm

After 10 years of what Katharine Schutta refers to as a “private practice” she re-emerges with a new series of works that explore art, intimacy, and transgression.

Schutta culls, crops and realigns images of contemporary art and art history, science, technology, and the natural world from a vast collection of auction catalogues, magazines and books.

In Tiny Dancer a peephole cut into the middle of ants moving in a circular pattern reveals a fragment of a caress rendered in soft pencil by Egon Schiele In her collage titled Beauty, a languid Christ floats in Gerhard Richter’s red sea, a meditation on desire. In Embrace, Peter Halley’s Brute masks the faces of Giotto’s Joachim and Anna, its cold geometric system in counterpoint to Giottos’ rich humanist expression.

Katharine Schutta has exhibited in the U.S and internationally. She received her MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and BA in Art History from Bryn Mawr College. Schutta also studied printmaking at the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow and was a Research Fellow at the Royal College of Art. She is currently an educator and administrator at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
