My art is about the urban environment. Chicago has so many distinct neighborhoods, each with its own personality; colorful and intriguing with so much vitality. I am inspired by actual places and occasionally include figures engaged in daily life.
My creative process begins with my photographs. I shoot many of the subjects and their surroundings, creating a montage of the very essence and character of the place. With sketches and composition decided, I then prepare a canvas. My emphasis is then on drawing with attention to perspective, using thinned acrylic paint and fluid washes. Once my intent is established, I switch to sensuous oil paint. Past, present and future are expressed.
A passion for architectural forms and embellished facades intrigue me. Capturing the energy, rhythm and emotional feeling of a place is my challenge. I sense a solid foundation in this city. I hope to engage the viewer and share a moment of connection.
